• running doors in C-Net!

From Stephen Walsh@39:901/281 to All on Sun Feb 8 14:59:59 2026
    Hey Guys/Girls,

I've written a multi-node/multi bbs chat door system.

It's working great in Zeus (We actually have weekly chat's), and I'm seeking information on how C-Net run's CLI (STDIO) based programs (Doors).

For example zues runs it like this:

    Clidoor '"doors:zirc/zirc-cli %51|"'

(%51| is Zeus's code for the users nickname).

Note: I don't want to setup a C-Net bbs, just information on how to run doors/external programs. (I have a couple of Cnet sysops that want to run
    it on there own bbs's)

Hey, I'm running CNet. I'd love to run this program too.

You can run the doors from a command, run doors:doorname, or from the BBS itself as a CNet command.

    Where is the program??

Finding how to run the external/doors for cnet has been the issue.
I'm not finding any documentation, so someone that knows cnet inside and out
    is what's we need.

    Where is the program??

They are not wildly released just yet, but I do put the files up on my bbs. There has been lots of testing and bug fixing. I need to put in place a way
for someone to test the client setup, without joining the network (We have three linked servers that use encrypted links), as the client side is un-encrypted and firewalled off.

There are weekly chat's 9pm (CST USA) saturday's, or 2pm sunday (AEDT).
(I can be in and out some days in my afternoon, testing the client
software. Sometimes a new server version.)

You can see the client part in operation on these systems.

Guys, this software runs nice.. If someone can get it to work on C-Net it would
be a great thing.. I have it running on my Mystic board and have tried to get it to run on C-Net but no luck because of the way C-Net handles calls differently.. It runs from my CLI window though...

Thanks to Al, there is now a "CNet" option in the config file, that allows Zirc

After doing some standalone testing of the client, reach out via the email address in the doc file, and a local server

This program is outstanding, the Saturday night chats will now be a lot bigger if needed, not knowing how many lines your board has, but mine has 10, so if someone were to do another release party like I did a few years ago (which got about 12 people to show up) Tim doesn't have to worry about a waiting room etc. Anyways, between this and FidoBlitz! I have this now installed and working on RoF. What is
different in this client to connect to an IRC over C-Net's IRC
    program?

Zirc is based on IRC, and only uses some of the irc codes/ideas. It is not a full irc client, as its aimed at BBS use.
For example no Nicname change, single channel usage, only some irc like commands.

The real work is done on the server side, as that has custom code and protocol written in Python. (Runs on Linux/Windows).
For example, the client is un-encrypted, but as soon as it leaves the server it's encrypted.
All links use a Public/Private Key and Password combination for connections, and encrypt the data.

The server's sync user/channel, message information (Memo server: Able to send a offline user a short message). Each server can
link to another server, and when I expand the linking protocol, will be able to
link via a mesh network. This will mean that no
one server is a point of failure.

1, let me know if I can host a server once you have that set. 2, If the server is down, which I thinnk may have happened yesterday. I would log into zirc, and when it sayds connecting... it lock my board and waits for someone to click reboot. I have not tried it yest today, but I will in a few.

Thanks! I'm up and running now too. I don't have it as a menu item yet, just in
PFiles. How do I do the menu item thing again? Just run it?

    Thanks

1, let me know if I can host a server once you have that set.

There's no issue with you hosting a server. It's how the system actually works. The idea is to take the load off the Amiga, and have a modern system do all the
    hard work.

2, If the server is down, which I thinnk may have happened yesterday.
I would log into zirc, and when it sayds connecting... it lock my
board and waits for someone to click reboot.

There are timeout's built in. 15 seconds for the client to connect.. It then says why and gives you information
to forward on (ie: to the sysop/me).

If it crashed (It looks like that from your next message), hopefully a log file
was created before the crash. If
not then please describe your system setup and what the errors are, and email them to me.

Btw: I see you did actually connect today, register and cause what's now been termed the "spitfire" bug!

Something happened when you entered your email address, and it had "1800" in front of it. Causing all sorts of
issues across the network.... (Had me thinking "what the hell happened"), until
I saw one of the remote server's
log files and was able to fix right away.

That your system refuses connections on the binkp port.

It's in the BBSMENU file, you would add it to the main menu section by calling a DOS command and then adding ZIRC it's hard to explain it here because with the BBSMENU file you have to copy and paste the first MCI command in \ doesn't work.

On Thursday February 12 2026, Gary McCulloch said to Stephen Walsh:

Note: I don't want to setup a C-Net bbs, just information on how to
run doors/external programs. (I have a couple of Cnet sysops that want
to run it on there own bbs's)

I would be interested in trying it out also. Let me know where I can get a copy and try it out myself.

See my recent reply to Jeffk.

There is an issue if the server is down. If it is down, and I load up the program, when it gets to Connecting to server... It will lock and cause my system to reboot. It needs a saftey catch that if the server is down or can't connect, it logs you back to the BBS.
If there is away to have a network of servers, this would be good. So if one is down, it rolls to the next one. With that said, I would be happy to be a back-up server. Just some thoughts.
