• Zeus 1.8 released

From Neil Williams@39:13/0.20 to All on Sat Oct 3 22:42:26 2026
    Hi all,

    It is out!
Zeus 1.8 is available for download. Either on the website, or from my BBS.
It's tested here, but please take backups before installing !
I consider this a test run for Zeus 1.9 which will be a massively larger release.

    ---------------------------------

Zeus BBS 1.8 Released - Adding Native Telnet Support

October 2026 -- The Zeus BBS project today announced the release
of Zeus 1.8, an update to the Amiga bulletin board system software.
The headline feature is a complete, native Telnet implementation, alongside
a major rework of the filebase engine and a round of security hardening.
Also included for the first time is an Amiga Community Trial key, unlocking
    all features immediately after installation.

    Native Telnet, with TLS
    ------------------------
Zeus 1.8 introduces TelnetConnector and TelnetListener, giving Zeus direct Telnet support for the first time, with no external Telnet-to-serial
gateway required. TelnetListener answers incoming Telnet connections on a configured TCP port and hands them off to a line; TelnetConnector serves
that line exactly as the existing serial Connector does, so callers see no difference in how the BBS behaves. Both support telnets -- secure Telnet
over TLS -- using the optional AmiSSL v5 integration, with self-signed certificate generation built into the Lines preferences editor.

Supporting utilities were updated to work over a Telnet connection as well
as a real serial line alongside related performance enhancements.

    Filebase engine, reworked
    --------------------------
The filebase backend (fbzeus.library) received a significant performance
and reliability pass. Accumulations of files - along with their changes, updates, uploads, downloads and everything that's happenened over the
decades that a Zeus BBS has been running - exposed a number of performance issues in the filebase engine. These are fixed, along with significant
reworks of the FileRebuild and FileEditor tools for ease of use and reliability.

    Also in this release
    ---------------------
o ZPOP3Xfer has been substantially revived, including POP3S (POP3 over
SSL/TLS) support via AmiSSL v5, a Ctrl-C abort handler, and support for
alternative configurations via a CONFIG argument.
o A round of security review fixed buffer overflow risks across
zeus.library, zmf.library, Zeus core, BBSLine, ZMailer and ZMP.
o ZMP gained a CONFIGTEST mode that validates a mailer configuration
    without running any tasks.
o SysOpReport is a new tool that gives sysops a single at-a-glance
summary of things needing attention: users and files pending
validation, message areas that look unconfigured, and TLS certificates
approaching expiry -- with an option to renew those certificates
    automatically. RenewLineCertificates makes certificate renewal
    scriptable from the command line.

A full list of changes is included in History.doc in the release archive.

    Availability
    ------------
Zeus 1.8 is a full install archive containing the complete Zeus
program and utilities. It includes a Community Trial key file for anyone
to test the system in full. The archive can be used for a fresh install or
to upgrade an existing Zeus 1.5 or newer installation.

    Download: https://www.zeusdev.co.uk/

Zeus has its own support BBS, The Killing Ground, reachable via Telnet at bbs.zeusdev.co.uk:2323 or over FidoNet, where the Zeus_AMY echo is
    available on AmigaNet.

    [...]

Have downloaded and done a install (No customisations) on:

    1: Amiberry (A3000 config), bsdsocket.library emulation
2: Amiga 3000 (Real machine). Roadshow TCP/IP Stack.
    Both running OS 3.3.2

In both cases the following issues are present:
The following directorys are not created

    Zeus:rip/icons
    Zeus:users

With the missing users directorys new user accounts are not able to be
saved. The usereditor also gives this error "UED Error: Cannot Init User
    Key!".

Once the directory is present, the user can be saved and the ued works.

There are also issues with some of the scripts (ZeusError.Log):
    R 05-Oct-26 15:18:31 | Script: FILES/NEWLIST.zeus 3 10/25 (Missing
    OTHERWISE)
    R 05-Oct-26 15:19:40 | Script: FILE/QUERYMARK 3 5/1 (Program not found)
    R 05-Oct-26 15:25:02 | Script: FILES/NEWLIST.zeus 3 10/25 (Missing
    OTHERWISE)
    R 05-Oct-26 15:25:33 | Script: OPTIONS/LISTSIGS 3 5/1 (Program not found)

Also when trying to write a message, it looks like DTE is hanging.
    line3.log:
    # 05-Oct-26 15:25:50 | DTE T:MsgText.3 25 80 0

    T: contains, Door.3.6ac415de
    That has:
    Stack 4096
    Zeus:Bin/System/DoorControl 130661760
    EndCLI

When it hangs, all I can do is disconnect. The bbs still thinks I'm online though and the only way to clear it is to quit zeus and reboot the machine.

'icons' is my fault - I missed -e on the archive command to include empty directories. Users should be created by the installer though, that did work testing locally.

I'll quietly repackage and upload a new archive this evening.

There are also issues with some of the scripts (ZeusError.Log): R

I was hoping the old scripts would be okay - I have not changed them and only gave a quick review, expecting them to work okay. I don't want to invest time into them when 1.9 will have a new scriptset (or maybe 2).

When it hangs, all I can do is disconnect. The bbs still thinks I'm

Ouch - there should have been no changes to DTE. I will have to check further. I'm not removing DTE but effectively it will be superceded by ZTextEditor (ZTE)
    in 1.9.

I have been doing some testing... DTE hate's OS 3.2.3, it works fine on OS 3.9 that I run on my bbs. (Amilithon)

Have done a test upgrade from 1.5/1.7 to 1.8. The only thing that's giving
me issues is changing lines 1-2 to telnet lines and creating two more telnet lines, with the new telnetconnector.

    That's great!

I am looking to simplify TelnetConnector in 1.9:

Like how old Telser uses telnetd, TelnetConnector relies on TelnetListener.

Part of 1.9 is ZTelser, and that takes a different approach. Instead of having an external program to listed for connections, each line (or device node) will start a listener process. If another line/device comes on the same port, it joins the existing group.

But this might be a 1.10 change as it's so reliable at the moment and I don't want to break anything! :-)

Yes, but only in Zeus 1.9.

How stable is it? Is there more to configure in the telnet support?

I'd like to see "bot" protection. Ie: user needs to press 'esc' twice within
15 seconds to get through to the bbs, otherwise the line is dropped.

I've been thinking about doing one myself, but where is the right place to
    plug it into the system?

    Feature request:
Add a feild to the user account settings for having the users email address.
At the moment I'm using the "Street" feild for that on my system.

This would then allow the creation of a password recovery system (That's why
my system askes for it.). It's yet to be written though.

It seems good, fairly stable, but in flux. The only crashes I've had are from the AI subsystem - but that's optional, just leave it offline.

There is more in Telnet, yes (see below).

I'd like to see "bot" protection. Ie: user needs to press 'esc' twice within 15 seconds to get through to the bbs, otherwise the line is dropped.

Well, you could put ZMailer online as the connector (through ZTelser) for that but it's a bit overkill!

    I've done the following:

    1. Rate limiting.
    2. A timeout getting the username, in the scriptset - you can do this now with 1.8:

read MINLEN 3 MAXLEN 40 ONLYALPHA MAKENICE RESET XOPTS '":/"' TIMEOUT 30000000

    3. Stability! A bot / scanner hitting the telnet port does not crash it.
    That's battle-tested here!

I've been thinking about doing one myself, but where is the right place
to plug it into the system?

I don't know what your scriptset looks like but you can add that to Logon/Logon.zeus very early on. It should be fairly easy to drive through ARexx.

I'll add it to my todo list to add to the new default scriptset (I'll make it optional).
