Hello all,

I'm trying to get logs output to someplace any place besides the journal.

I'm running under linux/ubunu, sbbs 3.21.f. I don't seem to understand how to work the logs in any mode.

I start my system via systemd via /sbbs/exec/sbbs d .

I've touched the /var/log/sbbs.log also /sbbs/data/logs/sbbs.log

I've configured my rsyslog.d/sbbs.conf

I've tried various combos of the config settings in sbbs.ini, but nothing is appearing in the logs.

My settings in sbbs.ini are:

[UNIX]
; User/group name to run as
User = sbbs
Group = sbbs
; Run in background:
Daemonize = False
; was default Daemonize = False
; File to create/write-to with process identifier (when daemonized)
PidFile = sbbs.pid

Does anyone understand what is wrong?

One thing that does appear in /sbbs/data/logs/sbbs.log is:


Reading /sbbs/ctrl/sbbs.ini

Synchronet Console for Linux-x64 Version 3.21f Copyright 2026 Rob Swindell

But that seems to be all.

Well I figured it out.
Looks like this document works well. URL:http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:separate-unix-logs

At least now I have something happening in /var/log/sbbs/sbbs.log

This document did not help me.

didn't seem to work.

I have to see if seperate log files actually arrive. That hasent seemed to happen yet. Not sure why.

More to do. Maybe with the config settings within sbbs.ini.

Then you did something wrong. It works for me. I would hope it works for me because I wrote the wiki page based on my configuration that works perfectly.

It is possible I did something wrong. I've done that lots of times. Specially when I'm learning about a system.

I didn't know if I should have mine be set as syslog:sbbs with a mode of 775. On ubuntu 24 I'm using rsyslog.

Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

Is your ownership on /var/log/sbbs bbs:bbs?

bbs@bbs:~/sbbs-git/src/sbbs3$ ls -ld /var/log/sbbs
drwxrwxrwx 2 bbs bbs 4096 Sep 5 04:29 /var/log/sbbs

It is but it's also chmod 777 that I should probably fix to be 750.

I didn't know if I should have mine be set as syslog:sbbs with a mode of 775. On ubuntu 24 I'm using rsyslog.

If your user and group is sbbs then I would use that rather than syslog.

Also, if your user and group are not bbs then you'll need to change fileOwner in your rsyslog.d file.

In my sbbs.ini UNIX secion I commented out the Users and Group via ;

I also switched to the same logFacility as your config
LogFacility=3

The changes I made to my UNiX session logging.
I don't really understand why using Facility=S creates a single log.
S (for single ?)

We've got the same OS.

Also, if your user and group are not bbs then you'll need to change fileOwner in your rsyslog.d file.

I'll change my folder ownership back to the users and group sbbs is running under.

In the rsyslog.d file I did set those correctly.
I noticed if all those are not set correctly rsyslog.service failes to start or degrades. I missed one when editing the file after copy and past from your wiki.
