The Trump administration has submitted a proposal to end the competitive advantage that Chinese airlines have over American airlines. Since the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine, sanctions have been in place on both sides. Russian airlines have been banned from American and European airspace, while Western aircraft are no longer welcome over Russian territory.
These measures do not apply to Chinese airlines. They are allowed to use Russian airspace and therefore do not have to detour. Western airlines are required to do so, resulting in longer flights and higher fuel and personnel costs.
Western airlines have long complained about this unfair competitive advantage, and President Trump now wants to intervene, according to Reuters news agency. If the proposal passes, Chinese airlines will have to choose a different route on flights to the US.
Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern Airlines, among others, operate between China and the United States.
