• NTSB Releases first information about the Amazon Prime Air crash

    The NTSB has released initial data from the black boxes of the Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 cargo plane that crashed in Miami. Flight data indicates that the aircraft struck the runway at high speed shortly before the recording ended.

    Thirty seconds before the recording ended, the nose gear and the right landing gear made contact with the runway. At that moment, the Boeing 767 was traveling at nearly 300 kilometers per hour. Nineteen seconds before the recording ended, the left landing gear also touched down on the runway. By then, the speed had dropped to approximately 250 kilometers per hour.

    The data suggests that the pilots may have subsequently attempted a go-around. A few seconds after all wheels had touched the runway, the brakes were released and the throttles were advanced to generate additional thrust.

    However, eleven seconds before the recording ended, the throttles were returned to idle power and the brakes were re-engaged. The pilots did not use the engines' thrust reversers to further slow the aircraft.

    At the end of the recording, flight data shows the Boeing 767 was still traveling at approximately 120 kilometers per hour. The aircraft ultimately came to a stop about 400 meters past the end of the runway.

    Five people lost their lives in the accident; they were in cars located at the end of the runway. The two pilots have since been discharged from the hospital and are being questioned by investigators on Wednesday. One of the pilots reportedly left the aircraft visibly shaken, according to CBS News.

    The NTSB expects to release further details from the cockpit voice recorder after that. Additional flight data and other evidence are also being analyzed to determine the cause of the accident, NTSB officials told Reuters.
