No kidding. Just ran into a glitch with grub on both uefi and legacy with kv-6.1.12 so rather than downgrade the kernel I opted out for taking a grub-git out for a cruise. It worked!!! I just got it working about half an hour ago and am currently bringing everything back into sync on this overpriced toy. > :-)

Did you have a problem with grub saying there were no valid file systems found?

I ran into that and couldn't install grub. Even using a grub rescue cd failed to load up. I was building a fresh install after making changes to my partition scheme so I had fresh partitions with new ext4 file systems on them.

I archived /mnt/lfs and did a quick install of an older slackware and did the partitions over and created new file systems with the older tools and extracted the lfs archive and I was good to go.

A bit of a rodeo but I'm back in business. From what I gather after reading a bit of google searches grub looks these newer file systems and sees features it doesn't recognize so it fails bummer. I'm hoping for a new grub release, this one could be a deal breaker for those using newer tools to create a new file system.

I actually tried building grub from git but I was missing dependencies and wasn't sure where to get them.

Turns out that it requires patching for the new e2fsprogs-1.47.0 which I forgot I updated. So the git version is no longer required.

I was using the git version on a slackware-current live DVD. I didn't check the version but slackware current tends to be upto date.

When I did the git clone of grub it grabbed the source from master. When I ran ./configure it said I needed gnulib (if I remember correctly). I wasn't sure where to get that or how to build it, or if it would work so I bailed.

Sure wish I new about or saw the patch!

I checked my sources directory and there is no patch in there. It must have just landed.

If I remember right (and I may not) I ran ./bootstrap and then ./configure but it couldn't find what was needed and I wasn't sure how to get it.

It's all good now though. Grub builds and runs fine with the patch applied.

Your right! I just grabbed the grub source on another (slackware) machine here and I ran ./bootstrap and it grabbed gnulib and carried on. I think I ran ./autogen.sh before but I should have let ./bootstap do that.

It found a lot of dependecies on that machine and took quite a while to run compared to building in the lfs chroot.

One day I am going to see if I can get the starfield theme working.

Yep, I survived after jumping a small hurdle.

This issue will only affect folks who use the newest e2fsprogs to create a new file system. Rolling releases like archlinux are going to have to keep an eye out for that and get the patch applied to grub or they will have issues.

One nice thing about stable releases is that these things are solved before a new stable release.

Yes but you only have to run ./bootstrap the first time. You could make a tarball from the resulting source after running ./bootstrap and thus save yourself building time on other targets or future from scratch builds.

That was my plan, just tar.gz it up and put it in the /mnt/lfs/sources directory and carry on.

Yep, I am just working on some depenencies for the desktop. I'm going

I just updated the kernel to 6.1.9 earlier today and I see
penguins here on my bios boot machine.

No love here yet but closing in on it. I currently have two legacy
machines I can try it out on. I figure by the weekend I *should* have a
working legacy boot but no promises on boot penguins as both are i915. I
may switch one to a uefi later.

I don't see the penguins until the screen goes blank (kernel
modesetting I think) and then they show up after that. I never saw
them until I added the nouveau module.

I have penguins now.

I was just looking at the golded source and there is an ebuild in the contrib directory. Have you ever tried that? It may be old, I'm not sure.

I recently redid my partition scheme here and I added a space for gentoo on it. There is no file system on it yet but when I get some stuff out of the way I plan to do that and have a fresh look at gentoo.

One thing I noticed when I ran make oldconfig is that the nfs v4 server is enabled by default now. I was thinking of enabling that for a look but so far I have stuck with v3. Look like v4 is on now.

I couldn't resist. On the plus side, everything is still working including the patched grub, although I am seriously thinking of switching back to the git grub just so I'm ready when it finally gets updated. I am guessing a new version isn't too far away.

My neighbour "He who is Paul" says that he was enabling all versions when he last used nfs. Like me he now uses sshfs instead since it is far less complicated to set up and use. I never used nfs that much way back when and quit looking at it back in the late 1990's.

nfs is still working as expected here. I haven't told either side to use v3 or v4 but they connect fine. There is no mention in the logs what version they use but it's happy whatever it is.
