I think you may be on to something!
How is progress with this? Is the terminal UI display also in the
works here?
For example, Golded displaying one byte per character while being
unaware that UTF-8 is multi-byte, so when things are translated to
UTF-8 there is early wrapping, etc.
If you need, I wouldn't mind helping test this feature! ;)
My copy of Golded is not configured to do unicode but I can save it.
SC Unipad gives three replacement chars in the Thai text.
Babelpad has in addition trouble with the Arabic text.
After I deleted the troubles it displays fine in Notepad.
So, I've finished a huge refactoring of GoldED+ code (of course, not
without the help of AI, otherwise there would be a year's worth of work there). There are a lot of changes in the code, everything is documented
and described in notework.txt.
You can test it from my repo fork https://github.com/evs38/golded-plus/tree/unicode Use the “unicode” branch
I'm getting a little tired of testing all these changes, especially
since I have to do it on a dozen different platforms and compilers to
make sure I don't break anything. So some help would be appreciated 😀

Hello Chris!
Saturday August 22 2026 14:06, you wrote to me:

You can try GoldED+ version from here: https://github.com/evs38/golded-plus/releases/tag/golded-plus-1.1.5-20 260825 It should work with unicode out of box. But check the XlatLocalCharset / XlatConfigCharset / XlatAreaCharset config options,
may be they need to be configured to UTF-8.

Currently testing it right now. I went back and looked at a few
screens that used to display improperly (early wrapping due to
multibyte characters with a somewhat "hacked" UTF-8 setup), and they display correctly now! ;)

What are the future plans? Are you going to get rid of translation
tables altogether, or plan on keeping them for backward compatibility?
Nice job! A few times, hours into it, I had AI running around in
circles trying to at least support multibyte characters in Golded's UI while displaying a message. That and my patience wears thin when it
gets things blatantly wrong, or says something completely different
from what it said 5 minutes prior. I can only imagine what you've put
into it. ;)
I'll leave them; they don't get in the way. In fact, they supplement the conversion of characters that iconv, the Win32 API, or ULS might not recognize—for example, MAC-CYRILLIC.
While reviewing the code, I actually found quite a few areas that could
use further investigation and optimization. So now I want to test
what’s been done, finish up what’s described by me in todowork.txt,
and address some cosmetic issues that I don’t like (such as handling emojis in ncurses or message coloring in the old curses on BSD systems, which for some reason works completely randomly), and merge all the code into the main repository. Many of these cosmetic issues have been around
for a very long time and have nothing to do with Unicode; we’ve simply gotten used to them and stopped paying attention to them.
Thanks! That's right. AI isn't yet a tool that can function on its own,
so programming or design skills are still necessary. The problem is that
AI can’t put such a large amount of information — such as the code
for an entire project — into context, even though it isn’t that
large in size. What’s more, it will forget what it’s done and end up writing a bunch of duplicate functions instead, reinventing them from scratch every time 😃

Great! It's definitely nice to see more progress, and I'll continue to follow along for the ride!
Is there anything specific I can do (even if out of the ordinary) to
test what has been done so far besides just continue to use it? I was
kind of going in expecting some issues, and honestly haven't had a
single one. All of the display issues I had before while forcing UTF-8 when multibyte characters
weren't supported have gone away.
Only thing I've seen different so far, is in the area list, the arrows pointing at areas with new messages at almost the beginning of the line(s). Before they looked like: -> (but fancier, obviously), and now they look like: |> (colored in).
Also, If I remember right, "make strip" now fails.

I will. Eventually.. At the moment I am on the move with my caravan
and writing from my point system.
I downloaded the mingw32 binaries and I am now typing on that version.
I don't get the UTF-8 in my weekly utf nodelist report to display correctly.
The O with dash does in my origin does not display correct either.
But most of it seems to work as in the old golded...
did you set up the XLATLOCALSET to UTF-8? :)
And now evrything displays as expected.
All passed :)
Many people are still quite skeptical and fear that others will start writing in UTF-8, which they can’t read, while their old software only supports 8-bit CP866.
But as I already wrote in the announcement, the point wasn’t so much
to write in that encoding as it was to fix the whole situation with support for all encodings and their display. I wanted to read FIDONEWS with the name Björn Felten, not Bj?rn Felten or, worse yet, BjФrn Felten.
But I hope that in the future, UTF-8 will indeed be used more and more often—at least for reading. And once most people have updated their software, there will be echo conferences where it will be standard practice to write in this encoding by default, while allowing other encodings with the CHRS kludge.
Yes, this and many other fixes are included in the new release. So just
use GoldED as usual and send me any bug reports :) The arrows looks like
a UTF-8 terminal thing: i didn't touch that code :)
Chapeau!

We never thought we would see the day! ;)
So... can we see your name spelled correctley with a diaresis on the 'e'
in future?
Cause that is the correct spelling isn't it?? "Boël" ?
So... can we see your name spelled correctley with a diaresis on

Maybe, maybe not. ;)
If you care to use it in your UTF-8 nodelist, you can be my guest.
Cause that is the correct spelling isn't it?? "Boël" ?
In a generationally, verbally, and handwritten passed down sense, yes,
but my birth certificate (done with a typewriter at the time) doesn't reflect it, the government doesn't send tax bills to it, and US
keyboard layouts don't include a key for it, so it has always been a
pain to type it that way (ALT-235 on Windows, or something like CTRL-SHIFT-U then type 00EB on Linux).
Even actually using it in the past when filling out forms by hand, it doesn't go very far since others won't go out of their way to write or type it that way. Made me give up on it at a young age. My wife and
kids, while they know about it, don't use it, and I have had no living family left outside of our household that actually spelled it that way
for quite some time now.
As for Ward's concern, if I were to be somehow distantly related to
the family with the same name in Belgium, I'm not so sure I would want
to associate myself with someone that sued their way into royalty,
either. ;)
What you see in the header is what I edited manually. Just for the
occasion.
So "oe" is pronounced like the vowel in the English "boom". Your name
"Boel" woyuld be pronounced as "Bool" by a Dutchmen of he didn't know it
is English. With the trema (Boël) it is pronounced as Bo-el.
