• Testing UTF-8 name (hopefully)

    Hello All,

I beg my pardon. I am uncertain how to configure real name.
I had this setup already working but then I decided to
harden my BBS and change my Sysop account to lower privileges
and created common user for standard mailing.

I beg my pardon for yet another try.

    Have a good day 😉

Your name in UTF-8 in the header looks OK.

But now the "CHRS: UTF-8 4" kludge is missong in your message.

I beg my pardon. I am uncertain how to configure real name.

    You are getting there.

    Note:

At some point in the evolution of Fidonet, UTF-8 may become the default character set and the "CHRS UTF-8 4" kludge may no longer be needed like "CHRS: ASCII 1" is not needed now for messages written in ASCII only. But as it is now many implementations will not work properly yet without the kludge in case of UTF-8.

I see it properly without the kludge because my Golded is configured to use UTF-8 by default in this area.

    Cheers, Michiel

To be fair, many implementations will not work properly with or without the CHRS kludge supplied, nor will they ever be updated to do so. ;)

Indeed. Some legacy stuff will never be updated to support UTF-8. Or properly support anything other than pure ASCII for that matter. Not suprprising for a museum...

But what we may see is that the use of that old stuff will decline. In the past ten years we have seen that the software that is still updated has moved in the direction of supporting UTF-8. In that process I see the new Golded+ that now uses Unicode internally as a mayor break through.

We see something similar with IPv6. Some old stuff like the systems that run on OS/2 or its spin-off will never be updated to support IPv6. But new systems that appear in Fidonet more and more often support IPv6.

    Cheers, Michiel

Yes, as it has been for awhile now.

    Yep. Agreed!
