SUMMARY...Scattered very intense, efficient thunderstorms with
capability of 1.5"/hr rates and widely scattered 1.5-2.5" totals
(possible isolated 3") likely to result in flash flooding into
this evening. Overlap with highly prone, flashy rivers/canyons,
may result in spots of significant flash flooding.
DISCUSSION...GOES-W WV loop shows longwave trough is sliding
through the developing closed shortwave over central NV providing
increased vorticity across east-central NV into SW UT, this is
concurrent with strong broadly anticyclonically curved jet streak
across central AZ to NE UT denoted well by broad cirrus canopy
with embedded west to east transverse banding indicative of the
strengthening jet. This shield is also dense enough to have
limited the insolation across portions of the Four Corners, but
west where full insolation has occurred is also under broad
diffluence along with the dPVA for strong upper-level
support/outflow regime for convective development.
CIRA LPW also denotes the strong synoptic structure to the
deepening cyclone through layers, with 700-500mb denoting
important structures across NV, with tight inner core enhanced
moisture near the mid-level cyclone extending eastward along the
deep layer frontal/deformation zone pooled across north-central
UT, while a narrow dry slot crosses Clark county nosing toward SW
UT. In the lowest layers, the sub-tropically connected surface to
700mb layers show a narrow ribbon of anomalous moisture with Tds
in the mid to upper 60s in the Colorado River Valley proper,
angling to the nose of the aforementioned dry slot while broader
850-700mb .5-.66" moisture covers NW AZ filtering into UT. As
such Total PWats of 1.25-1.5" fill the valley extending into far
southern UT spread eastward into SE UT. These moisture values are
2-3 standard anomalies from normal in monsoon season with some
portions of northern and central UT reaching 97th to 99th
percentiles through this evening.
With the full insolation and note of low level moisture
intersected with steepening lapse rates in the narrow dry slot,
RAP analysis denotes a small pocket of 3000 J/kg of MLCAPE across
far SE NV but 1500-2000 J/kg extend outward along a well defined
effective dryline (60s dropping to 30s within 50-100km) generally
between LSV and DRA/TPH and then again with a drop off between
mid-50s Tds and low 40s Tds across west-central UT, though strong
southerly (10-15kts) is helping to filter/deepen moisture profiles
northward with time.
As such, given the divergence/dPVA, scattered to numerous
thunderstorms have developed in the diffluent region across SE NV
into SW UT. Cores are broadening with time and broader than
typical up/downdrafts in average monsoon days. This will increase
local residency though forward cell motions are 20-30kts, only
slowed by weak to moderate updraft rotation (note bulk shear in
the 40-45kt range). The overall moisture flux will support rates
of 1.5"/hr and given orientation of linear features in the
diffluent region, there could be random intersections in 2-4 hour
ranges to support localized 1.5-2.5" totals with an isolated spot
or two of 3"+ not withstanding. The sheer intensity alone on
rugged/rocky terrain would result in flash flooding, but longer
than normal durations at any given point will likely result in
scattered to numerous incidents of flash flooding this afternoon
into evening. Where cells align for repeating and totals of
2-3", an incident or two of significant or even catastrophic flash
flooding cannot be ruled out.
