• Epic is bringing Fortnite to Linux

    From Lawrence =?iso-8859-13?q?D=FFOliveiro?=@[email protected] to comp.os.linux.advocacy,comp.os.ms-windows.advocacy,comp.sys.mac.advocacy on Wed Oct 14 23:32:37 2026

A Triple-A game maker sees the writing on the wall: <https://www.theverge.com/games/1010808/epic-fortnite-linux-anti-cheat>

Epic are saying “... we are rebuilding Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and
working with distro maintainers on security requirements”. So will
they only permit their game to run on a supported distro? Would that
extend to forks/flavours/variants of that distro? Would they introduce
some concept of “unauthorized fork”, as if exercising your freedoms
with Free Software could somehow be classed as “unauthorized”?

It’s clear desktop Linux has now become more popular than the Apple
Mac. I said this already happened back in 2023, but some others are
still reluctant to embrace the fact.

Yeah, Linux is never going to replace commercial OSes, this talk has
been going on for eons and it misses the point, Linux is a great desktop
OS when nothing else is usable, but by and large one will have a more wholesome experience using Windows (or potentially macOS). Linux
enthusiasts, and I have been one for a time myself, are simply
projecting to think that the platform provided by MS, as well as
Apple's, are not competing anymore, somehow.

I know that game has existed for at least eight years now. The fact that
such an old game is finally being ported to Linux isn't a sign of much.

Can you supply any evidence to that "more popular" claim? I cannot say I
know a single person who uses a Linux desktop or laptop.

I do :-D. But I also use macOS. And I use Docker on macOS.

It is a silly claim with no evidence. I have helped people migrate to
Linux when they had older hardware and did not want to buy anything
newer. Not one, that I know of, has stayed there. Now my sample is tiny,
and it is not like I do follow up calls to check in a year later or
whatever, but it is mostly been a stop-gap measure until they can buy
something that works better for them.

Not to say nobody uses it. People do. The type who do would not have
been likely to call me in to their homes to assist them!

Yes -- I just did: a major PC triple-A game maker is bringing out a Linux-native version of a game which it has no plans to make available
    on the Mac.

    From Brave search:

"Fortnite is not natively available on macOS for the latest game
versions due to the ongoing dispute between Epic Games and Apple."

It has nothing to do with the capabilities of Mac hardware.
