• Two months with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on a GMKtec NucBox M6 Ultra

While I like the look and feel of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS something can be said
about the issues I encountered. Especially the crashing of applications,
the disappearance of icons, and WiFi suddenly not working. None is
really a deal breaker to me but I can imagine that for a beginner those are.

I haven't had many problems with 26.04. Thunderbird sometimes stops
working. It doesn't crash but doesn't collect mail from the STMP server. A restart fixes it.

I doubt I'll go to 26.10. GNOME isn't my favorite DE and I've no desire to
see how long it takes to sort out GNOME 51. The KDE 6.8 on the Tumbleweed laptop works well although I've not, and probably never will, use the new features.

I only use Thunderbird on macOS. What I've noticed is that after a while

restart fixes this. It's still in 158.0. There is an update to 158.0.1 available, no idea if that contains a fix.

I just use whatever comes with Ubuntu :-). Don't like to configure
things endlessly. And I pick Ubuntu because it's common. If I run into
an issue others might have done too, and maybe provide a fix.

macOS and iOS have NNTP clients to envy, as a Winblows/Android guy. I
can admit that. Not enough to make me switch, though, I just put up
with Thunderbird on Windows, and let it be.

    Cool!

I am currently stress testing it. At 1.3M posts (total) it has some
areas it needs to be sped up but mostly handles it well. The biggest
issue is a group with over 800K posts takes a long time for first
opening. For only working for about 10 days it is coming along great.

Want to make a video to show it off -- and with Usenet being public it
is not like I am sharing anything personal.

I only have Thunderbird on the Ubuntu box. It's a snap and is 1.140. At
work I used KMail but iirc I had a problem configuring it for the Exchange server. Thunderbird worked and is cross platform. I used it for newsgroups
but kept hitting strange format issues and moved to Pan.

With Windows and macOS, the OS you get is a full package. That's also
largely true of most desktop Linux distros, which ship with a default
desktop like GNOME or KDE. The difference is that Linux is built as
loosely coupled layers (kernel, display server, window manager, desktop environment, toolkit), so you can swap pieces more easily, though mixing
them can get messy. macOS is also UNIX (certified, in fact) and has the
same kind of layering underneath, but Apple tightly coordinates
everything and doesn't let you replace the GUI layer. That makes
swapping effectively impossible, but it allows for polish and
consistency. Windows sits in the middle: you can't replace the window
system, but third-party shells and theming tools exist. Each approach
    has pros and cons.

Have you used Usenapp as a comparison?

    MacOS only, right?

Yes. So if not macOS, well, you have not. Fair enough.

I am just focused on the macOS Usenet client world because I am
making my own -- and *maybe* if things go well I will try selling it.
Trying to get a feel for what people like / dislike.

You might do better in a mac group than a Linux one.

Fair. LOL! I also do like Linux, though I am grossly behind the times
with it. Used to run tech in small schools and worked to add Linux labs.
For schools it was ideal -- donated hardware that Linux works great on.

Just a note that anything involving “look and feel” and “icons” is a GUI issue, not an OS issue.

This is how Unix-type systems work. Those coming from proprietary
platforms like Microsoft’s and Apple’s often have difficulty
    appreciating this fact.

Are UNIX-like systems supposed to break every time a fruit fly in the
computer room farts? You don't have to be coming from a proprietary
platform to feel that is awful.
