    PSA:
Which standard text-messenger (SMS/MMS) apps can name any conversation?

Quick checklist to confirm you're in an RCS-nameable group
    1. Does the Google Messages message box say "Chat message"?
    2. Do you see read receipts or typing indicators?
    3. Does Group details show a field for the group name?
If all three are true, you can name the group.

In a recent thread, the tangent came up that only the best SMS/MMS
messengers can uniquely name any conversation (individual or group).

My (last known good version) of PulseSMS has always been able to name any conversation (whether individual or group) so I looked up the others.

    Apparently, with Google Messages <com.google.android.apps.messaging>
    a. As Andy noted, RCS groups can be named (because RCS supports it)
    b. But apparently SMS/MMS groups cannot be named

    Unfortunately, with Samsung Messages <com.samsung.android.messaging>

    a. SMS/MMS groups cannot be named

    b. Individual SMS/MMS conversations cannot be named

    c. No app-level feature exists to name any conversation

It's very confusing which Samsung Messages apps support RCS, but if your Samsung Messages subversion supports RCS, Samsung Messages apparently still does not allow naming conversations, even with RCS support. Go figure.

Apparently Smart Messages <com.messages.chat> has SMS/MMS/RCS support.
As does Beeper <com.beeper.chat>. And Mei <com.mei>.

Other SMS apps (Textra, Chomp, Mood Messenger, etc.) do not support RCS.

Google's documentation explains that you can name a group only when the conversation is an RCS chat, not SMS/MMS. When RCS is active for all participants, Google Messages exposes a "Group details" screen where the
name can be set or changed.

Apparently Google Messages supports names & icons for RCS group chats.
    <https://www.androidcentral.com/apps-software/how-to-customize-group-chats-google-messages>

Android Central also confirms that Google Messages now supports custom
names and icons for RCS group chats.

Bear in mind that the group name is local to your device where other
members may not see the name unless their device and OS support RCS group naming (iOS 18+ does, but behavior varies greatly on other variables).

Note that anything in this PSA can be wrong as I don't use RCS.
It's just my assessment of which MMS/SMS apps can name conversations.

Since RCS is cross platform, here's some cross-platform datapoints.

I get "most" of what's in RCS with PulseSMS, but of course, they're
different things altogether, but I do get group and individual naming.

RCS came with iOS 18, released in 2024.
Any iPhone that can run iOS 18 supports RCS such as the iPhone 11.
But none of the X iPhones support iOS 18, hence they don't have RCS.

RCS is NOT enabled by default on iOS.

    Caveats:
RCS only activates when messaging non-iMessage devices (e.g., Android).
RCS messages still appear as green bubbles, just like SMS/MMS.
Apple added RCS in iOS 18 (2024) & expanded features in iOS 18.1+
