• Screen goes dim after 10 seconds

My battery was down to 16% and I tried 3 cables in 3 ports and couldnt'
charge it, so somewhere, in the Settings I think, in the Display part
(on a Xiaomi) I tried to save what battry was left by changing iirc the brightness setting, from automatic to something else. Now it goes dim literally within 10 seconds and sometimes it goes black soon after that.
I'm constantly having to tap the screen to lighten it, and if I'm not
quick enough I have to press the Power button to wake up the screen.

I went back, I think to the right place, right aftr this started and
there were not as many options showing, several fewer, including this
one. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or how to reverse what
    I did.

(This part I did get fixed. Also in Security / Battery / Current Mode,
I switched it from Balanced to Ultra Battery Saver. It didn't even show
more than 12 apps after that, but maybe by swiping, I got to it show
most of them (all of them I think but 5 or 6 were greyed out) Settings
didn't show at all, but there was an arrow or something in the upper
right by which I was able to end Ultra Battery Saver, after I had found
a cable that worked**. This is the only device I have with usb-C input
port, and I'm sure I used all 3 of those other cables to charge this at
one time or anytong, but they didn't work today And there was a fourth
one that only worked when I pressed in real hard. Very strange.

**Actually the cable that works has a Micro-B end and an adapter to
convert it to type-C. I have anoher C-C cable that would work from the
C-port of the newish laptop, but I havent' tried it yet. )

I may have fixed this, with the help, believe it or not, of ASI***

ASI aslways repeats all the elements of your question, to give you the impression that it considered all of them, even though I often don't
believe it has done so. And I told it Xiaomi, which is relevant because setttings are not arranged the same as in some phones.

And it told me: To fix your Xiaomi screen dimming after 10 seconds
following battery saving, disable Battery Saver mode in Settings >
    Battery,

    I had already done that.

turn off Auto-brightness in Display settings,

    I had already done that,

and increase the Sleep timer (Settings > Lock screen > Sleep).

That I had not done and it seems to have worked. It was a strange
thing when I first turned on extreme Battery Saving, beucase it didn't
tell me what changes it had made.

Battery saver automatically restricts performance and dims the screen
    to conserve power

Screen lighting remains by far the biggest problem with this phone.
The screen dimes and turns off even when it's set to never dim while
charging. So when I'm driving and it's charging and the battery symbol
is green, I still have to touch it every few minutes to wake up the
    screen.

And the screen goes on when I put it in my pocket, sometimes 4 times in
a row, sometimes maybe a little later, even though I've done everything
anyone says will stop that. So it runs the battery down.

Someone in a forum wrote me that one of those is a bug in some xiaomi
phones. When I thought the charging port was broken I was happy that
I'd be forced to buy another phone, but I'm not so lucky.
