Targeted =/= Relevant. Its never ads for stuff that is actually
relevant to _you_, its ads for stuff that they've been able to sell to >others that may or may not vaguely be in a same demographic as you.

Or just "Hey, we see you bought X yesterday. Here's another twenty
offers to buy X again. Even though X is obviously the sort of thing
you only buy once a year."

Me, I just object to adverts because of how sleazy, manipulative and low-information they are. Even when you know what they are doing, you
aren't immune to marketing tactics, so I just do what I can to avoid
    the stuff altogether.

    1) It doesn't ask me because I'm registered

    3) Well, I really don't want to... but that is a

    4) I would if the reward was better. Maybe if you

    5) Sorry, even two clicks is too much work.
    6) No, I never join a group that would have me

Okay, you all can probably guess my answer. I'm a grumpy introvert and
I don't like sharing more information about myself with corporations
than I need to. I fall squarely into Group #6... although I suppose if
the reward is _really_ worth it I might be convinced. But it would
take a heck of a lot more than a cosmetic item (or three).

Where do you draw the line?

    6. I can't remember signing up for anything unless it was required to
    play their damn game.

I still might do it eventually, if A. it wasn't an AAA evil magacorp.
and B. I really like more than one of their games, and C. I thought the
    hat was cool.

Congratulations! You just installed a new game. The first thing the
game does when it starts up is asks you to link your Steam account (or
create a new account) with the publisher's newest online service. It's completely optional (you can play the game without), but it's
otherwise completely painless; it won't require more than two or three clicks, and you'll get an exciting bonus (let's say a fancy new hat
for your character to wear) if you do so.
