• Shed a tear for poor Nvidia, won't you?

Well, it's good to see the AI RAMpocalypse isn't only fucking ordinary
users. Because RAM and DRAM prices have skyrocketed, it's also costing
nvidia close to $900 billion dollars. How? Because they have to pay
for the RAM when users make warrantied claims against broken GPUs. You
(or, more likely, AI and crypto-bros) send them their broken card, and
then they gotta fix it... which may mean replacing the RAM, or just
sending out a new card. But either way, Nvidia has to pay for the RAM
on that card, and the prices of the stuff have gone up dramatically.

How dramatically? Well, as stated, a recent report by Warranty Week
indicates that in 2025 it cost Nvidia $894 million USD for these
replacements. The year prior? $81 million.*

Of course, this isn't /entirely/ due to the outrageous RAM price
increases. It also likely has a lot to do with the increased RAM on
modern GPUs, and how many more GPUs Nvidia is selling to corporations
which end up driving these cards very, very hard (an average gamer
probably pushes his GPU moderately hard a few hours a week; the AIbros
run these things full-throttle 24/7). But the RAM costs definitely are
    a major factor.

Still, it's hard to feel any sympathy for Nvidia and the other tech
companies (especially since that $894 million dollar cost is a drop in
the bucket of Nvidia's $4,400,000 million dollar valuation). But it's
nice to see them suffering even a little bit, like the rest of us
rubes. Something about petards and hoisting, I think.

I'm sure they are working hard on solving that problem.

By finding a way to pass the extra costs on to the customers.

By finding a way to pass the extra costs on to the customers.

    On a not-too-but-maybe-a-little-bit related note:

Facebook (sorry, "Meta") has announced that they're being forced to
raise the price of their Meta Quest VR headsets because of the
increase in RAM prices. Poor, poor Facebook, being forced to do this
thing... because they are one of the major companies snatching up all
the available RAM in their chase after AI.

But look, it's worth it. AI is, as Facebook's face-man Zuckerberg told
us, the Next Big Thing. And he should know! He predicted that the VR
was going to be the Next Big Thing (NBT) and bet billions on that. And
then spent billions on the metaverse too, which was the nextest Next
Big Thing. And then he told us crypto was the newest NBT and spend
billions on that. And then NFTs after that. So he's a guy who really understands tech and we should all listen to him when he tells us how
this chase after AI will change the world for the better! ;-)

But in the meantime, just pass on the costs to the customers of your
last Next Big Thing. They won't mind, I'm sure.
