• FREE GAMES: "Rogue Waters" and "Songs of Conquest" [EPIC]

To quote a certain rabbit, "I'm late, I'm late!" But even if this
announcement is coming out a few hours after the fact, it's still
valid. After all, the free games are still there on Epic for another
    whole week!

    #

    * Rogue Waters
    https://store.epicgames.com/p/rogue-waters-9764d6
A pirate rogue-like RPG; at first glance it looks interesting
but the reviews, man; they paint an entirely different picture.
Buggy and with bad mechanics and interface, this game is not
getting a lot of love from its audience. With more effort this
could have been a winner, but as it stands it's probably not
    even worth getting for free.

    * Songs of Conquest
    https://store.epicgames.com/p/songs-of-conquest
A fantasy 4X that seems to be in the same vein as the classic
"Heroes of Might & Magic" games. I don't think it'll make any
converts of people who don't usually care for that style of
game --you won't find any "Call of Duty" fans suddenly
clamoring for more games like "Songs of Conquest"-- but if you
like the genre it's a nice (if not exceptional) addition to
    your library.

One good, one bad; an above-average week for Epic.

See you in a week for more!

Me too (of course) but I have to admit, the likelihood that I'll
actually PLAY the game is pretty low. If I'm in the mood for a
HOMM-clone, it's far more likely I'll just play Heroes of Might &
Magic. Less because I think it's better, and more because I'll never
remember that "Songs of Conquest" exists ;-)

    Also, HOMM1 & HOMM2 are permanently installed on my hard-drive. That's
a big incentive to play those games over any competitors right there!

But I took the game anyway. The Number must be fed or it gets grumpy.
And the last thing you want is a grumpy Number. The maths don't work
    out when that happens.

Yeah, I may just forget I have the damn thing when I want to play some
HOMM and so I will just play HOMM 3 again.

I do recommend HOMM3 over the earlier two as it is just a better
version of them, but if you want to stick to HOMM 2, you may want to
check out Fheroes 2. It adds higher resolutions to HOMM 2 (which makes
the game look really nice) and also adds quality of life improvements
from both HOMM 3 and from the free HOMM 3 HD mod.

I recommend this mod for anyone here who likes HOMM but prefers 2 over
    3. -->

I actually like HOMM5 'the best,' except that even though it says it
requires 4 GB RAM, relatively light, it still runs like crap on just
about any computer. Slow and clunky, but great art. My guess is that it
    just never received proper optimization.

I played HOMM3 recently completing the entire Restoration of Erathia
campaign, with both the two Spoils of War factions won. However, when continuing on to Armageddon's Blade and Shadows of Death, I found myself tiring of the older graphics.

This is basically why I'm on HOMM5 whenever I decide to continue with
    the series.

I'm not really the biggest fan of the franchise, and I'll be honest in
saying that I can't remember enough of difference between HOMM1, 2 and
3 to say I have a preference for one over another. I'll happily
acquiese to your claim that HOMM3 is the better product.

But it's not installed on my computer so I stick with the ones that
    are ;-)

    Still, I grabbed the mod (technically a fan-made remake/port, I
guess?). Even though the clunkiness of the old games (running on DOS
and using tinny soundblaster audio!) is half the reason I stick with
    those versions.

But who knows, maybe one day I'll get in the mood for some major
HOMM-style gaming but want a less painful experience. Then I'll be
glad I have the remake! ;-)

    Thanks for the pointer.

Yes, HOMM 5 has its fans. And they do mention the 3D aspect of it
being one of the main reasons they prefer it to 3. It has been called
    'HOMM 3 in 3D'.
