• Gothic Remake: The tempation is strong

So, the "Gothic Remake"* is now available.

It's not that I expect to like the game. You know me; I'm generally
not a fan of remakes, and the demo released a couple years back really
    soured me on the project.

(In fairness, I've read that a lot of other fans felt the same way and
the developers heeded those complaints. Apparently the released
product is significantly different from that 2022 demo)

Certainly the latter games in the series did little to improve the
first two. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry has caught up and what
seemed new and exciting in the original "Gothic" is now de rigueur for
the genre. I doubt I will get the same experience of novelty and
cutting-edge gameplay that (sometimes) imbued my gameplay of the 2001
    game.

But it's Gothic, and I admit that my nostalgia for that classic CRPG
is starting to overwhelm my good sense. Enough so that I am actually considering buying the game at full price... even though that goes
against all my instincts and experience. This remake may be a good
game... but will it be worth the $50USD they are asking? There are so
few games that manage that, and I'm not sure this is going to be one
    of those exceptions.

Still, it does look pretty and it's been a long while since I last
played a game in that franchise...

Quick, let's all go to Polymarket to gamble on whether or not I'll be
able to hold out on buying this game or not. Will "too expensive /
it's a remake!" win out over "But it's Gothic?!?" Place your bets and
    take your chances! ;-)

(am I allowed to place a wager too? ;-)

I almost just bought it and it had good user reviews on Steam, but the
PC Gamer one gave it a blah and a 60/100. And checked another. Since
I am not a veteran of the series, which seems to help, I am unsure.
    Might pass right now.

Assuming my willpower holds out (the betting is still going strong on
Kashi as to how long I'll be able to resist! Don't miss out on your
chance to win big! ;-), I intend to at least wait until some more
serious reviews come out. It really seems to early for anybody to have
a real opinion of the game; right now the Steam reviews are the usual breathless hype-fed responses (mostly positive, sometimes negative,
but more a response to the expectation of the game than the actual
product). Hopefully that will give me a better idea as to whether or
not to buy the game now, or to wait for a sale.

But man, the existence of this game and it NOT being in my library
already grinds on me. But I'm holding strong... so far ;-)

PC Gamer was fairly luke-warm on the original 2001 version of the game
too; "Gothic" got a 75% from them back then. ;-)

I'm trying to RESIST the temptation! You're not helping!!!!! ;-)

But no, I haven't purchased it; not yet. Everytime I come close to
cracking, I remember my purchase of "Mechwarrior 5".

Like "Gothic", "Mechwarrior 5" was a modernization of a niche classic
game from twenty years ago, and highly anticipated by its fans (myself included). I purchased MW5 on release, at full price. I was
disappointed with what I got. It wasn't a bad game, just not worth the
cost; it's a game I really wish I had waited until it was on sale to
buy. I suspect that, were I to buy "Gothic" now, I'd end up feeling
the same way. So I wait.

[But the remaster of "Gothic" does have one thing working in
its favor: it's $10 cheaper than "Mechwarrior 5" was on
/its/ release. But I struggle to ignore that fact in order
    to bolster my resistance.

I've got money bet on my lasting to the first sale on
    Polymarket, see.]

I read a couple more reviews, at websites I never heard of, and at

metacritic that said the controls are still aweful. That is all I need
to stay away from a game!

Yeah, the newer reviews on Steam aren't particularly favorable.

The control issue complaints I'll take with a grain of salt; it's not
    that I disbelieve them, but I don't think it's as much a game-killer
as some are making it out to be. I think people are expecting this to
be something more akin to Dark Souls, and that's never really what the
combat is Gothic was like. It's always been a bit clumsy (it's combat
was more akin to that in the early Elder Scrolls games), and
--assuming the developers are trying to keep true to the original--
some of that 2001-era gameplay undoubtedly crept into the remaster

[It's always a problem with remasters: how much of the
clunkiness of the original do you keep and how much do
you streamline away? Go to far and people compare it
unfavorably to modern games; to much in the opposite
direction and people say you've lost what made the
original so challenging. It's lose-lose, either way.]

So it's not that I think the controls are great, just that I think a
lot of players are comparing the game to something it shouldn't be
compared to. In truth, the controls /might/ be as absolutely terrible
as claimed... but I don't think the reviews are the best way to
    determine that.

[I probably should try the demo to see for myself. Except I
    don't like playing demos.]

More seriously is the complaint of bugs and optimizations. The latter,
of course, is extremely subjective, but the former not so much. Crash-to-desktop complaints are frequent in the user reviews. All this
wrapped around a package which is generally unpolished and somewhat
dated in visuals and gameplay to begin with.

I still think it's possible I'll have a lot of fun if I play the
remaster (assuming the developers didn't muck it up too much, but the
one thing the reviews seem to agree upon is that -problems aside- it
does capture a lot of what made the 2001 game so memorable). But
increasingly it seems the better strategy to wait on the purchase:
wait for the bugs to get fixed, wait for patches to add the necessary
QOL features and polish, and wait for the price to go down.

Still, a focused CRPG like that? It does seem the perfect type of game
    to play right now...

You guys are no fun! Boring!!!! :-)

It's true. I'm quite boring. Why, I drilled through three pieces of
    wood today already!

But I can't answer your question better than I did simply because the
sale hasn't started yet, so NONE of the wishlisted games made the
    cut... yet.

Odds are high, however, that the cheaper games will get the nod. Not
so much because they are in any way better, or that I can't afford the
more expensive ones... but simply because I can buy MORE cheap games,
and it's all about quantity with me ;-) ;-)

But in order to seem less boring, here are a couple games on the
wishlist I /hope/ go on sale at enough of a discount for me to pick
    up:

    - Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries: Chaos Reign (DLC)
    - Selaco
    - Metal Wolf Chaos XD
    - Cronos The New Dawn (currently on sale, but I want more sale ;-)
    - Crimson Desert (despite the middling reviews. I like pretty)
    - Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

It's not to much to hope that all of those make it down to the $5
    range, is it? ;-)

    *--

You crack me up Spalls! I looked up some of those on Steam, they look
pretty good! But not at current prices. I am with you on that (Metal
    Wolf, Cronos).

I have Indian Jone on my old PC but haven't reinstalled it yet on my
current one. Too many puzzles. But not the bad type. Speaking of that
    - I really wanted to like Crimson Desert. I finally got the controls
to be tolerable, epecially the camera. But, it was one stupid puzzle
after another stupid puzzle and that caused me to stop playing it. I
could not take one more puzzle. It is pretty though. It is still
installed but not sure I will keep it like that for long - especially
if I find a game that is worth swapping the hard drive space for. Got
so sick of having to look up how to solve the puzzles because I had no
patience (or confidence in myself to) to deal with them. Combat was a
PITA, not that I got far enough into it for there to be much of it.

I hear and acknowledge everything you (and everyone else) has said
about this game. I am not in a position to dispute these claims
either. But reading about the tech used in the game (mostly with
regards to the visuals) and some of the features (such as the sheer
scale of the map, and the destruction you can commit on the buildings)
just makes me want it all the more. No, I probably won't enjoy the
gameplay. Yes, it'll pretty much just be a tech demo. I accept all
    that. I want it anyway.

But, taking all that into consideration, I don't want it so much that
I pay a premium for it. Hence, the need for a sale. Preferably a very
    steep one ;-)

I have tried to ignore the puzzles and just wander around but I don't
think it is possible. It sure seems weird and probably way to much to
do and too many things to do and learn. Not sure if I am going to go

Knowing what I know now about the game, from playing it, reading about
it, and watching youtube videos mostly for tips and figuring out the
darn puzzles, I would no way have paid full price for it!

you are right! But when will it go on sale? A year or two from now?
Heck, with the lack of great games so far this year (as far as I know
about), it might even win GOTY!

After the beginning, the puzzles have been few and far between, it's
been mostly combat and wandering around. Probably at around 16 hours?
    I'm at 24 now.

Supposedly the game is around 100 hours for completionists, which
probably means 200 for me with all the goofing around I do. I hear improvements are still coming at a steady pace, and they're working on
making the story more complete, and have decided to put to down until
it's been out 6 months to a year.

The thing is... if you really are interested in the game and there is
even a reasonable chance you'll like it, just buy it.

One of the reasons early games stayed with us the way they did is we
had to hoof it to the fucking store and buy physical media, pay a
certain amount, and we knew at the time that if we try to bring it
back because we couldn't free up enough RAM in DOS or whatever there
was going to be a douchey guy whose job it was to try to talk us out
of the return and say it was our fault.

Under those circumstances we felt "invested" in time and money into
the game, and that drove us to invest ourselves into finding enjoyment
with it.. sometimes the the investment had a massive payoff and
sometimes not, but it's amazing what your brain sometimes unlocks
    under those circumstances.

In musician circles (at least among good musicians), it's well known
that too many options limits the mind's creativity... the mind will
try to streamline and channel what it already knows into your next
endeavor if you don't challenge it.

What's different about today and why we're spoiled is that we have the
means to vet so many options before we're too invested... that
streamlining happens automatically and before you know it we aren't
really trying anything new or allowing our brains to branch in
different directions (and yeah, you guessed it, AI won't help with
this, it only helps with the streamlining part, leading to increasing stupidification of society).

Just buy the fucking game instead of spending your life typing about
how bad you want to try it.

There's a last minute cheat code if you get it from Steam, just refund
it if you don't like it. But you'll have a hell of a lot more fun if
you take to heart everything I said before asking for a refund.

Good to hear J!! Then I might try it, but I don't know if I can hang
in there long enough with these stupid puzzles that have nothing to do
with the game but I think are necessary to improve your character with combat,...

I am only at 6.2 hours according to Steam, so that is another 10 which
is more than double twice as long as i have hung in there so far.

    Thanks!

I don't think I can do more than I have done already for you Spalls.
But wait - there is Reddit, and I haven't reviewed the game on Steam
    yet!!

I don't do Reddit - I only look up things I am needing help with that
    I do - professional stuff.

Looking at the game, its loop mostly reminds me of the "Mount & Blade"
games. Not so much in the specifics, but in that it's a giant world,
with a vague but mostly unimportant main quest and the core of the
loop is mostly just wandering about taking quests. It's more sandbox
than narrative tale. It's not my favorite type of game, but I don't
    despise it either.

But then, I'm not really all that interested in playing "Crimson
Desert" as a game. I'd be thrilled if --should I ever acquire it and
started to play the game-- if I fell in love with it and ended up
spending hundreds of hours with the game. I just don't have any
expectation of that happening. Rather, I think I'll just gawk at the
visuals and wander about marveling at the game's scale... and then
start nitpicking at it as I observe all the shortcuts the developers
have taken to make the gameworld so huge.

Still fun... just not $70USD-worthy fun.

Well, unlike Bethesda games, the areas increase in difficulty, and level
& gear are important to be able to handle those areas. So no just
tooling around and looking at areas (though running through is somewhat viable.)

Still fun... just not $70USD-worthy fun.

    Yeah.

My son is still playing it, but he's near the end. He wants me to play
