• Bummer (Or, On the death of an old friend)

    From Spalls Hurgenson@[email protected] to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action on Sat Sep 26 20:13:15 2026

Awww, my WinXP PC just died.

And I mean, it /just/ died. I had it running in the background, and
when I looked over just now, I saw it just turn itself off. My initial
thought was, "oh, I guess it entered sleep mode; I thought I turned
that off". But any attempts to revive it met without any luck. I
suspect the PSU, although I don't really have time to troubleshoot it
properly (I do have time to write an article about it on Usenet,
    though; go figure ;-)

The WinXP box is a heavily modified "Republic of Gamers" gaming PC I
scrounged from the kerbside some years back. I rebuilt it, and have
used it to play mid-noughties 9x and XP-era games that sometimes have
problems with more modern hardware and operating systems. Although
mostly it just runs nifty screensavers in the background, 'cause I
    like the pretty pictures. ;-)

Still, I'm not really surprised it's given up the ghost. It's an old
machine and none of its parts were new when I built it. The real
question is whether or not I intend to fix the PC or junk it entirely.
I don't really have any spare PSUs in storage, and I'm not sure
spending $50 (or $100, or whatever god knows if PSU prices have gone
up like everything else computer) to fix a PC that barely gets any
real use. All the more since it's such an old PC and finding PSUs with
a significant number of molex (as opposed to SATA) connectors can be a
    chore.

Still, I miss it's friendly background whir.

Maybe the rubbish-gods will take pity on me and I'll find something
nice on the kerb in the next few days? ;-)

Heh. It's not really that sorrowful. It's a computer, and not a
heavily used one. I'm more annoyed than anything else.

Now, had it been my Win98 computer, then I'd be upset. That gets more
use, and I put a lot more effort into getting it running.

Mostly, I don't look forward to finding a new PSU. Something new (or
old-new stock), that isn't from an Amazon 6-letter brand, with
appropriate wattage, /and/ it has MOLEX and floppy connectors... all
that without breaking the bank? I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

Awww, my WinXP PC just died.

    So XP, Xpired?

Sorry it had to be said.

Don't be sorry. It's a terrible joke, and those are terrific.

I'm Canadian, we always say sorry, even when we aren't.

You've heard the saying "Beware Greeks bearing gifts."?

    Beware Canucks saying "Sorry". :D

And unlike most places it's not legally an admission of actual guilt.

Heh. It's not really that sorrowful. It's a computer, and not a
heavily used one. I'm more annoyed than anything else.

dang i avoided reading this thread for a while bc of irl stuff and the
    name being really heavy :(

Now, had it been my Win98 computer, then I'd be upset. That gets more
use, and I put a lot more effort into getting it running.

Mostly, I don't look forward to finding a new PSU. Something new (or
old-new stock), that isn't from an Amazon 6-letter brand, with
appropriate wattage, /and/ it has MOLEX and floppy connectors... all
that without breaking the bank? I'm not sure it's worth the effort.

oh yea its probably about the worst time in history to get computer
    components rn

Yes, it was a tragic loss to the whole family ;-)

It really is. And it doesn't look as if 2027 is going to be any
    better.

I might just cheap out on a new PSU though. Normally I try to go for
quality because I expect to use the hardware for years -- decades
even!-- but this is for a trash-built PC that gets turned on maybe a
dozen times a year. So maybe paying the premium for reliability isn't
    worth it.

Well, you could reuse the PSU for your other PCs.

What, rip apart another PC and cannibalize it for the XP machine? It'd
be like tearing the heart out of one of my kids to put it in another!
I'd never do something like that!
