    Rather than doing the usual bashing about how disappointing the
    seasonal Steam sale is, let me try to be positive for once. But I'll
    need some help with that, so here's a PCGamesN article entitled '10
    Great Games To Grab During the Steam Autumn Sale 2026" https://www.pcgamesn.com/steam/autumn-sale-2026-games

    Their choices:
    * Sons of the Forest (71% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1326470/Sons_Of_The_Forest/
    * 007 First Light (30% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/3768760/007_First_Light/
    * Esoteric Ebb (25% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2057760/Esoteric_Ebb/
    * Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy (40% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2713000/Resonance_A_Plague_Tale_Legacy/
    * Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus (95% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/673880/Warhammer_40000_Mechanicus/
    * The Outlast Trials (90% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1304930/The_Outlast_Trials/
    * The Witness (90% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/210970/The_Witness/
    * Bramble: The Mountain King (82% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1623940/Bramble_The_Mountain_King/
    * Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (70% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2909400/FINAL_FANTASY_VII_REBIRTH/
    * GTFO (73% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/493520/GTFO/

    #

    Of their selection, really only "The Outlast Trials" attracted me, and
    that mostly because it was so damn cheap. Maybe "Bramble: The Mountain
    King" too, except I tire of these Indie platformers where young
    children run away from magical monsters. It's such an overdone genre.

    Other discounted games that caught my interest:

    * Stray (50% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1332010/Stray/
    It's got a kitty-cat!!! Too bad I already own this one.
    (I really only mention it to get others to buy it ;-)

    * Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (40% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2677660/Indiana_Jones_and_the_Great_Circle/
    Still a bit pricey for me, and honestly, I'm a bit tired
    of the franchise... but I figure if it's as 'good' as Tomb
    Raider I'll be happy... and reviews indicate it's better.

    * Echoes of the End (80% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2821610/Echoes_of_the_End_Enhanced_Edition/
    Mentioned here earlier by another poster. Looks
    interesting but I'm not sure I'm really in the mood for
    another game of this sort right now.

    * Kong: Survivor Instinct (47% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2769080/Kong_Survivor_Instinct/
    Run away from the giant ape as he rampages in this
    action/platformer. Looks really good but I don't think
    it has much replayability and it's not really a genre
    I'm that into, so I'm not sure it's worth the price

    * Atomfall (60% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/801800/Atomfall/
    British Fallout, basically, except a bit more crafting
    focused. It's fine but I hesitate because I still have
    "Fallout: London" to play.

    Any games catch your eye this season? Anything you recommend we take a
    look at, either because you think it's a good game or because it's

    you manage to resist the Call of the Bargin Bin this time?

    *--

    Maybe I will reinstall the Outlast Trials. Can't remember why I quit
    playing it. I am looking in my library and Steam for a spooky game
    for this Halloween. I have been trying to move along with Silent Hill
    2 now for two of them and it ain't doing nothing for me. Not very
    spooky, there is a LONG time between checkpoint saves and manual ones
    that you have to find, and between anything that happens. Just tons
    of walking around.

    Last year, I think, I bought the new Resident Evil one and uninstalled
    it because of the crafting BS. Wasn't as scary as other RE ones
    either. It was mostly a PITA to play.

    I guess there is always Left For Dead 2 to fall back on. But man, the
    maps are so huge and it takes forever to finish one and the combat is
    hard!!!

    So maybe not!

    True, Halloween season is soon upon us. I gotta think of some spooky
    games to play too.

    If I really want to scare myself, "Outlast" is where to start. I mean
    the original. That one was too much even for me. Something about its too-close-in FOV, and the dingy, wobbly view through the camera just
    was more than I could take. And there are some sequences in the
    original that still make me cringe thinking about it.

    "Alien: Isolation" is another good one to scare yourself with. The AI
    in that is scarily good (even if you can, eventually, pick up on its
    habits).

    "Dead By Dawn" can be quite effective in spooking you... /if/ you find
    the right group (and the right player to take on the role of the
    killer).

    Then there's "Manhunt". Not so much scary as just unpleasant, as you
    take on the role of a psycho-killer. Some of the kill animations are
    repugnant, but that's of course the whole point.

    Or the hillbilly-horror bits of "Resident Evil VII". A lot of the game
    veers into the usual weird-Japanese horror, but some sections of the
    game are genuinely creepy.

    So many games to choose from...

    Silent Hill climaxed in Silent Hill 3. None were as good up to that
    point and none have been as good since. I know PW wouldn't like it
    though because you play a 14 yo girl or something. Silent Hill 3 is unavailable on GOG Galaxy & Steam.

    I've seen the movie, but it never really 'clicked' with me, so the
    fact that a game is based on it means little to me. Plus, it just
    seems another in a long run of asymetric multiplayer games based on
    horror franchises. It's not that necessarily makes "Halloween" a bad
    game but since I already have "Dead by Daylight" and "Friday the
    13th", it means I have less use for the game unless it does something
    new or interesting.

    And the user reviews on Steam aren't indicating that it does any of
    that.

    "Alien: Isolation" is another good one to scare yourself with. The AI
    in that is scarily good (even if you can, eventually, pick up on its >>habits).
    I am reinstalling that one now.

    I liked "Isolation" but man, did that game overstay its welcome. It
    just kept going and going, long after it peaked; it just wouldn't end.
    By the time I got to the actual conclusion, I was more exhausted than
    scared.

    The game really should have ended after the "escape from the Project
    KG-348" level (the bit where they eject the module from the rest of
    the station and you have to escape back to the main station). That was
    a suitable climax and would have ended the game on a high point.

    (Also, I really disliked the change of making the game having one
    alien hunting everyone to where there was a whole hive. It felt cheap
    and lessened the horror of the titular alien. YMMV, though)

    "Dead By Dawn" can be quite effective in spooking you... /if/ you find
    the right group (and the right player to take on the role of the
    killer).

    correction: Dead by Daylight.

    No MP games for me.

    But... you're playing "Left 4 Dead"?
    (Yeah, I know, it has a single-player mod too)

    Technically, DBD has single-player against bots. But the AI is pretty
    limited and --unlike L4D-- the gameplay is more complex. Left 4 Dead
    is just running to the end-point blasting anything in your way. DBD is
    more about avoiding the monster and activating various objects to
    finish the level. Teamwork is essential. When it all comes together
    it's really good... but it can be hard to find a group that works. The
    person playing the monster also has to be good too; they need to know
    the level and mechanics, and shouldbe more interested in the overall
    enhancing experience than necessarily 'winning'.

    The one thing I don't like about DBD (and many other similar games) is
    that they have progression systems built in, where you can level up
    perks. I much prefer L4D where the all the characters are more or less identical. It makes for quicker drop-in gameplay. But again, YMMV.

    Their choices:
    * Sons of the Forest (71% off)

    Open world Survival, no. Well, I did see someone play this on youtube,
    and it looked interesting.

    * 007 First Light (30% off)

    86% on Steam. I'm not in to stealthers though.
    * Esoteric Ebb (25% off)

    95%. Hmm. Looks interesting, but I'm not truly into Turn Based RPGs
    anymore. Still $19 which is a little steep.

    * Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy (40% off)

    $49 at 40% off... no thanks. There's just something about the title
    that puts me off too.

    * Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus (95% off)

    $1.12 89%. I'm unfortunately not much into 40k or turn baed.

    * The Outlast Trials (90% off)

    $4 92%. Doesn't look that good to me though, I'm not into horror games
    as they tend to have awful combat though.

    * The Witness (90% off)
    Puzzles. No.

    * Bramble: The Mountain King (82% off)

    $5 94%. Sigh, horror, visuals look weak too.

    * Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (70% off)
    "mixed" at 65% right now. apparently the best version is the 2013 version: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3837340/FINAL_FANTASY_VII/
    On sale for $5. Though the graphic are much lesser, that' wouldn't
    bother me. I keep meaning to play this just to see what all the fuss is about. $5 is reasonable, I might get this. Or maybe it's just a
    passing fancy.

    * GTFO (73% off)
    Horror again. And multiplayer though it's at least co-op.
    * Stray (50% off)
    $14 for 5 hour of play, no thanks. Get that down to $5 and I'll buy it.
    * Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (40% off)

    It's pretty good, not quite the game for me though, I quit before
    completing it. My review from What have you been playing thread:

    Old Man Tomb Raider. I played 13 hours. It's a good game, but it's
    Bethesda so it's got flaws. The controls feel weird, I never quite got
    used to them. Combat is best melee and best either ambush or parry +
    riposte. Guns are better used a melee weapons lest you fire them and
    call all the enemies around. I played on hard so perhaps guns are more
    useful if played on easier difficulties. Cut-scenes are long and
    frequent. I'm not sure I care much for copying the actors into the game
    for everyone, but it works better here than most games. I don't like
    the voice actor for Indy, he sounds slurred, mumbly and old for the age
    of Indy here (I checked it's not Ford.) I didn't care for traveling the
    same paths over and over in Rome, I must've knocked out the same
    blackshirt at least 8 times treading the same path between two areas.
    On the plus side It's a beautiful game, though I guess I'm jaded as it
    didn't impress me all that much. The puzzles were fairly easy and
    reasonable. I did run into one about the time I was done with the game
    where I was supposed to take a picture of something, but I couldn't get
    the game to acknowledge it was pointed in the right direction/zoom,
    that's when I finally gave up. I also had a few bugs with stuff like
    the screen showing only in a corner of the monitor for awhile, and
    stuttering when I crossed zones. It's pretty good for a movie
    cross-over but not enough for me to keep with it.

    * Echoes of the End (80% off)

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/2821610/Echoes_of_the_End_Enhanced_Edition/
    Mentioned here earlier by another poster. Looks
    interesting but I'm not sure I'm really in the mood for
    another game of this sort right now.

    78% Yeah $8 the price is right, but it looks like a mediocre generic
    ARPG. It's somewhat tempting, but the generic puts me off. I like
    something that brings something new or unique.
    * Kong: Survivor Instinct (47% off)

    $13, but it's 71% and it's a movie game. I'm not interested at any price.

    * Atomfall (60% off)
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/801800/Atomfall/
    British Fallout, basically, except a bit more crafting
    focused. It's fine but I hesitate because I still have
    "Fallout: London" to play.

    $19 is pretty steep for how it looks. Also crafting (yuck.) But bonus
    for post-apoc and Brittish. I might consider it... if like you I ever
    get around to playing Fallout: London. Which is free, and less crafting based.

    Any games catch your eye this season? Anything you recommend we take a
    look at, either because you think it's a good game or because it's
    Just That Damned Cheap? Will The Number be going up for you or will
    you manage to resist the Call of the Bargin Bin this time?

    After you bringing this to my attention and looking through games, these
    are the ones I'm interested in:

    Helldivers II $30. - It's supposed to be somewhat similar to EDF, which
    I'm a big fan of.
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/553850/HELLDIVERS_2/

    Pragmata $48 (20% off) - This is the game where you're a little (AI)
    girl's dad, which got so much press. It's at 96% on Steam. It's tags
    are Cute Sci-fi Action Third-Person-Shooter Funny https://store.steampowered.com/app/3357650/PRAGMATA/

    Stellar Blade $40 (33% off) 93% - A soulslike (well barely, it has the
    tag though.) A lot of the soulslike community likes this one, so it's
    been on my radar for awhile. https://store.steampowered.com/app/3489700/Stellar_Blade/

    Death's Door $2 (90% off) 92%. An isometric soulslike. It's also
    connected to a web cartoon I like, I think. I'm getting this, at $2
    there's not much reason not to even if I don't really like most
    soulslikes, and the isometric puts me off. https://store.steampowered.com/app/894020/Deaths_Door/

    Days Gone $16 (60% off) 92%. Zombie Survival Open World game. Well it's
    open world and survival which I don't usually like, but I played it a
    bit on PS5+ streaming, and other than the extreme cloud streaming lag, I
    liked it.
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1259420/Days_Gone/

    Loop Hero $3 (80% off) 92%. It's a Pixel Graphics Deckbuilding
    Roguelite, which means I don't think there's anyone here who would play
    it besides me. But I'm getting it as it's well liked among the
    roguelite community, and only $3. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1282730/Loop_Hero/

    NieR:Automata $16 (60% off) 88% Hack and Slash RPG. I rather liked the pre-sequel NieR:Replicant, so this one's been on my radar for some time. https://store.steampowered.com/app/524220/NieRAutomata/

    Tyrant's Realm $4 (60% off) 83% Rogelite 3d retro graphics 3rd person
    Action. Similar to Blade of Darkness, I've been itching to something
    similar to it, I'm getting this one too. 3 I have to buy because they're
    so cheap and on my wishlist, that's enough for one purchase. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2259260/Tyrants_Realm/

    True, Halloween season is soon upon us. I gotta think of some spooky >>>games to play too.

    There is a new game called Halloween, but reviews aren't good. I
    never saw the movie so I wouldn't play it anyway.

The AI
    in that is scarily good (even if you can, eventually, pick up on its >>>habits).

/if/ you find >>>the right group (and the right player to take on the role of the
    killer).

    correction: Dead by Daylight.

The
    person playing the monster also has to be good too; they need to know
    the level and mechanics, and shouldbe more interested in the overall >enhancing experience than necessarily 'winning'.

    The one thing I don't like about DBD (and many other similar games) is
    that they have progression systems built in, where you can level up
    perks. I much prefer L4D where the all the characters are more or less >identical. It makes for quicker drop-in gameplay. But again, YMMV.

    *--

    Thanks for the heads up Spalls! I will only play it for a little while
    and not even dare to finish it. Then, uninstall it again :-)

    I wasn't as much a fan. It didn't help that the whole motorcycle gang

    quite ordinary and unexceiting in its open-world gameplay. It felt

    The girl is meant to be an AI so uncanny valley is perfect for it.
    'Cute' is usually a turn off for me though. I didn't realize that was
    Capcom either. I guess this one is coming off the list.

    I'm not into motorcycle culture either, but I do love riding motorcycles around in games. I only played it until I got on the motorcycle and

    Which reminds me I bought

    Dark Messiah of Might and Magic $2.50 75% off, steam rating of 89%.
    Before I realized there was more on sale. It's an Ubisoft title (no Ubi client required though.) I actually bought it because this youtuber
    I've been watching has been comparing a lot of games to it. It's fine
    so far, kicking enemies into things seems to be the way to go in the
    game, which I find somewhat funny. Real buggy though, it was crashing
    at the end of the tutorial every time, I found some info on how to get
    it to stop that, but it still crashed on me an hour later. Also the
    edges of the rendering area seem to be blurry. I'm sure that's
    intentional, but I don't like it. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2100/Dark_Messiah_of_Might__Magic/
