• Diablo II: The FPS

So there's news that somebody has turned "Diablo II" into a VR game* ,
and that's neat and all, but I'm not really into the VR scene. But
apparently they based the mod on another one that gives you much
greater control of the camera in "Dialbo II". How much better control?
Enough that you could potentially even play it in first-person.**

    Suddenly I am interested.

I was never the biggest fan of "Diablo II". Part of it was the
gameplay; loot-focused games just aren't my thing. But part of the
reason was the viewpoint; I just have a really hard time getting into
top-down 'isometric' games these days. Had there been an option to
play D2 in third-person, I may have gotten more into the franchise.

Alas, due to DRM limitations, the mod is only partially functional.
The game will detect code-modifications from the mod after a minute or
two and shut-down. So it's not really usable right now.

But maybe ActiMicroBlizVisionSoftZard will take a hint and build a
similar feature into the game themselves. They're a company known to
be really responsive to customer wants, right? ;-)

Wow, but I don't like wearing VR. Give me a holodeck version. Wait, that
might be too scary and physical! But you have to use D2 remaster online though. :(

Now followed up (or is that preceded?) by "Diablo I: The FPS" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkpLG9keQF0

It's actually a modded version of DevilutionX, the open-source
reimplementation of the original "Diablo" game (official game
data-files still required). Unfortunately, the developer hasn't yet
released the code since its still in prototype mode. But it looks
pretty good. Well, good in a old-school barely-out-of-DOS
dungeon-crawler sort of way. Due to the way the sprites are used, it's
quite pixelated but that's part of its charm, in my opinion. I could
imagine playing this game all the way through using this viewpoint.

Having turned "Diablo" into an FPS, of course somebody had to turn
around and make "Doom" into an isometric game like "Diablo".

    I don't know if this is the first attempt to make "Doom" like this;
it's pretty well done regardless of how original (or not) it is. I'm
not sure I'd like to play the game like this but it's odd how well it
captures the "Diablo" vibe. Amazing how a different POV redefines the
    game.

See? I told you it wasn't the first (even if I was too lazy to
actually research pre-existing projects)! Honestly, I wouldn't be
surprised if there were even more mods in that same theme. The Doom
    engine is so hackable!

I get shades of "Project Zomboid" from the mod you referenced, whereas
the mod I linked definitely felt a lot more "Diablo". Nothing wrong
with either; just interesting in how different view angles can effect
the feel of a game so radically.
