• Witcher 3: To download, or not to download; that is the question

    From Spalls Hurgenson@[email protected] to comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action on Thu Oct 8 12:55:14 2026

So, the remastered version of the "Witcher 3" recently released.
Because I already owned the game on GOG, the remaster was a free
upgrade; yay! And also because I own it on GOG, I can download the
stand-alone installer so I'm not dependent on an online-service should
I decide to play the game in 2072, or whenever. Also yay!

But it's 96GB, which seems a bit excessive just for an installer that
will sit on an old hard-drive. Especially since:

    a) I've already played the game through several times,
    b) I'll want to keep the 'classic' version around for
    compatibility with older hardware, and
    b) I have a hard time seeing the differences in visuals
between the remaster and classic versions anyway.

It just seems a lot of disk-space to dedicate to an installer that may
never get used. And it's not as if I'd be deprived of the game if I
don't download the installer; I can always use GOG's 'Galaxy' client,
or just play the classic version.

But the whole point of buying on GOG is to have the bulwark of
stand-alone installers. So not to make use of that option seems
contrary to the whole purpose. I'm so torn

Maybe I should instead just buy some new, bigger hard-drives. How
expensive can they really be anyway?

    (oh)

It's not just the visuals for a change, they've "improved" the monster
AI. Most people notice a difference, and like it.

I didn't realize that I have the enhanced version and that I played it
for a while. Got a little sick of it and got real tired of trying to
beat that baby thing - forget what it was called. And the game would
continue at another place than the last save game, in a different
area. So uninstalled it to make room for who knows what.

Excuse me, but my people prefer the name "Indiscriminate Collectors".
The H-word is considered offensive. ;-)

But honestly, I don't think I'll be downloading this. It's just too
big for too little a reward, and if I really want to play the game
again --which I assume I will, eventually-- I'll just use Galaxy.

I really need to expand my storage capacity though. My GOG installer
archive is 80% full, and most of my other drives are similarly
bloated. But HDDs are so expensive (just like everything else) and I
can't justify the purchase right now (especially since I have to buy
two of each for proper backups ;-).

On the plus side, apparently I'm not alone. A quarter of gamers have
less than 250GB free disk-space according to recent Steam hardware
surveys. I complain, but I have a lot more than that. ;-)

I prefer "Digital Packrat" for this sort of thing, games, pictures,
saved web comics, music videos, movies and other videos; covers them
all, without even giving the hint that you also have piles of newspapers
and used coffee filters about the place.

With todays high capacity drives, you can have 30 years of collections
in just one portable harddrive you can fit in a large coat pocket.

Heh, drive C: 425GB free of 1.81 TB, drive D: 7.34 TB free of 14.5TB.

I've seen some picks of DLSS applies to DS2 some look amazing, others
worse than original. Frost looks overall good looking at the youtube
    though.

I've only been into DS3 enough to mod it. I played Convergence, which is
like halfway between DS3 and ER. Only it was made before ER, I wonder
    where ER got those ideas.

I hear there's a Convergence mod (I'm assuming the same people) for ER
too, I'll probably eventually go back and try it.

I am interested in the Seamless Co-Op mod for DS2, but I'd have to have
a friend to play it with :(

There's also the 'modernization mod' which makes changed to make combat
more fluid, etc. which I'm interested n.

It's worth the effort, in my opinion. The game doesn't really start by
putting its best foot foward. The begining map and tutorial quests are
rather dull, and then it dumps you into the giant overworld map
leaving you feeling confused as what to do. But the story and the
characters do grow on you. The gameplay is less fulfilling --its
fairly typical hack-n-slash mixed with fetch-quests-- but it's so
beautifully rendered that its hard to hate it.

But it's not hard to fault people who wonder why this game is so
beloved. "The Witcher 3" keeps its best stuff hours into the game.

You can start the game semi-decked out and skipping the tutorial by
starting on one of the DLCs. I think I'll do that next time I play, now
that you've reminded me how annoying the tutorial and start of the game
    are.

I suffer from a severe motor disorder. I am incapable of combat more

Every video game gets magic wrong. It's more effort when it should be less.
