• Truck Sim nonsense: I Call It Sandwich Time

[Yeah, I'm talking about that damn truck game again.
Skip to the next post if you (understandably) don't
care about this game. Or don't, but don't say I didn't
    warn you. ;-)]

    #

I've been doing 80 down Interstate 40 for the last two hours. I've
plowed my way through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona carrying 20 tons
    of who-knows-what (I don't ask and I don't care. Just give me a cargo,
its tonnage, and its destination and I'm on my way. Pay me when I get
there). I've been pushing the speed limit as far as I dare, keeping
just under what the police will tolerate and winding my way around
slower traffic in a way that's /mostly/ legal. My arms are tired from
keeping the rig on track, feeling the engine shuddering beneath me,
but I got cargo to deliver and a schedule to keep. Going slow isn't
    really an option.

Then I see it; a sign pointing towards Barstow. I'm coming up to the
California border, and I know that just as soon as I cross that
invisible boundary, my reckless speeding is coming to an end.
California mandates a limit of 55mph for trucks, and maybe I'll be
able to push that to 60 if I'm lucky, but no faster. This lead-foot is
going to have to hit the brakes.

Now, maybe some drivers might take offense to this, and I get it. I
certainly used to feel the same way. Fifty-five seems abysmally slow
after the freedom of the desert highways. The faster passenger traffic
whizzing by doesn't help that mood either; nobody likes getting passed
all the time. I used to hate driving into California, and always did
my best to avoid the state if I could. But no longer.

California is my Sandwich Time. After the exhausting haul through the
faster states, it's almost relaxing to slow down. Don't blame me,
dispatch; it's Sacramento that's delaying my deliveries with their
laws. I'm just cruising along as fast as I'm allowed to go, and if
that's slower than you'd like, well, it ain't no never mind to me.

"But what's it got to do with sandwiches?" you ask.

It's all about the lane-assist and adaptive cruise control, you see. Lane-Assist is nice, but it really struggles at higher speeds. You
start pinballing between the lane markings, and it takes a steady hand
to even out those oscillations. It takes a lot of effort to wrestle 35
tons of steel and cargo into a narrow lane when hurtling down the road
at unsafe speeds. But at the legally mandated fifty-five, Lane Assist
doesn't have any of those problems. It keeps right in the middle of
    the lane, steady-as-you go.

"But I still don't see what it has to do with sandwiches," you say.

That's because we need to turn on adaptive cruise control too.
Fifty-five is nice and all, but sometimes traffic does slow down a
bit, and it's neat that your truck can now slow down (and, as
importantly, speed back up!) as the traffic flow demands. It really
takes a lot of pressure off the driver, you know?

"Yeah, but the sandwiches?" you cry.

Plus, there's this nice thing about California. It's long, and its
interstates are equally long. They go right up the length of the
state, and they're generally pretty straight and flat. Oh sure, there
are some twists and bends here, but overall the traffic is fairly
regular and not too troublesome to drive (somehow I suspect this may
be one of the biggest departures from reality in the video game, but
I'll forgive SCS Software this slight flaw. Sandwich Time wouldn't be
    possible otherwise).

"But. What. About. The. Sandwich?!?" you demand.

See, here's the thing. You got a long straight road, with an unbroken
55mph speed limit, and you add in some adaptive cruise control and
some lane assist... and well, what you get from that mixture is a
drive which needs very little effort from the driver. I mean, the
truck can practically drive itself. So if got just the right stretch
of road, and if you're fast, and lucky (and made a quick-save right
before you start!), it's possible --if you don't dally, and if your
kitchen is right next door-- to dart away from the computer, slap
together some bread, cheese and lettuce-- and get back to your seat
before you run off the road or hit another car. Maybe. I don't
recommend it, but take it from me: IT CAN BE DONE.

And after a two-hour session in ATS (and who knows how long until the
cargo gets delivered), that's not a benefit to be ignored.

And that's why I love Sandwich Time. May SCS never change the rules of
the game and take it away from me.

Real Truck-Sim Drivers (tm) never pause the game. We quick-save and go
to the kitchen attached to the side of the cab as it hurtles down the
road... just like you see them do on the highway ;-)

Oh, no worries there. People in American Truck Simulator don't show up
    in mirrors (and presumably cameras).

It's true1 If you ever play the game, look at a car in your rear-view
(or wing) mirror. Although you'll clearly be able to see them if you
lean out the window and look back at them, there's nobody visible
    through the mirror.

The only reasonable assumption that can be made is that everybody is a
    vampire.

(which isn't as far-fetched as it initially sounds. After all, there canonically are UFOs in the game, so why not vampires?)

Ditto the tale of some immigrant to the USA travelling cross country in
a Winnebego, and setting cruise control then going in back to make a
sandwich. He literally thought cruise control back in the 80s was the self-drive of today.

He crashed, the cops found that out questioning him after.

He's not lying. A guy with a van did this. I guess he was from another
country. He went in the back to make a sandwich... It's cruise control!

Oh, there's an even older story from the 1980s of some Arab oil tycoon >>turning on the cruise control of his Rolls Royce and climbing into the >>back seat to take a nap....

There was a movie that had a similar scene that I've been trying to
recall for days. A group --friends or family-- are tooling about in an
RV; one of the passengers in the back wakes up to find the driver
making some food. "Who's driving?" "Oh, I put it on cruise control."
"That's not how cruise control works!" Pan to terrified faces. Fast
cut to the RV deciding at that moment to drive off the road.

Of course, that joke has probably been done in a dozen movies and TV
shows since the technology debuted. And these days it's almost
    real-life with people mistaking driver-assists like lane-keeping for full-self-driving (I can't imagine why ;-)

Which is why I always quick-save before attempting something so stupid
    in real life ;-)

Meanwhile, the release date for the Iceland expansion for the "Damn

eagerly anticipating and dreading. Eagerly, because Iceland is
beautiful and I can't wait to drive its scenic roads. Dreading because
the official version is going to overwrite the version found in the
ProMods map (a fan-made map which added Iceland years ago), and its
rendition of that island was one of the best parts.

The Iceland expansion is being released on 10 November, but I suspect
I won't be playing it until some weeks afterwards because it always
takes that long for the various mods I use in ETS2 to get updated. So
y'all may get a break from me talking about truck sims for a month ;-)

It's true1 If you ever play the game, look at a car in your rear-view
(or wing) mirror. Although you'll clearly be able to see them if you
lean out the window and look back at them, there's nobody visible

Who else is going to have the natural instincts to fly the UFOs?

    The Aliens that built them?

Your argument is the equivalent of putting birds in the cockpits of
passenger jets instead of pilots, cause of their "natural flight
    instincts".

Maybe you want to fly on Cockatoo airlines, but I'll pass.

What natural flight instincts do human pilots have? ;)

None, but humans built the things and know how they work and are trained
    to fly them.

The Cockatoo may have natural flight instincts, but it's going to be
useless at flying a Boeing 767.

Speak for yourself. I'm not a pilot, and I have never been /trained to
fly/, but I have an instinct for the air pressure below the airplane,
when I'm a passenger, and I know it's not going to just fall down.

So, you can call that /mistaken instinct/ if you want, but it's still my instinct, so there!
