• Serious Sam: The Third Encounter

    From the steam listing page:

"Serious Sam: The Third Encounter picks up exactly where 'The Second
Encounter' left off, bringing classic run-and-gun mayhem to bold new
worlds. Bigger hordes. Bigger guns. One last score to settle with
    Mental."

I really hope that the third encounter keeps its apparent promise to
be a continuation of sorts of the 'Second Encounter'.

I have many fond memories of the 'First Encounter' and the 'Second
Encounter'. It was a different time in gaming back then of course and
I was a lot younger and obsessed with first person shooters.

Since the 'Second Encounter' we've had:

    SS2
    SS3
    SS4
    SS Siberian Mayhem

All of them were OK games, but not a patch on the first two chapters.
SS2 suffered from 'consolitis' but was still a fun enough game in my
    opinion.

Here's hoping for a welcome return to the SS roots!

Me too Mr Rob! What timing! I was just saying to myself that I have
a half-hour before my self-imposed cut off time for the night and
thinking what I could play for a few minutes - couldn't think of
anything. But now, I am going to install the last SS for times like
    this! Thanks!

The original Serious Sam was a breath of fresh air. As much as I loved
"Half Life" and "Call of Duty", having every single FPS being a
cinematic FPS was getting a bit dull... and Serious Sam's return to
crazy balls-to-the-wall action against dozens of enemies at once made
it feel incredibly fresh. It also benefited from having a
(comparatively) high-tech engine that made the mainstream engines --
IdTech, Unreal-- look a bit dated in comparison. And that it came from
an unknown developer was a callback to the early heyday of PC gamers,
when a group of nobodies could out-do the big-name publishers... like
    Id did with Doom.

Their later titles lacked a lot of that freshness. Second Encounter
felt like more of the same, but that was okay; the first game was
still fun and more wasn't necessarily bad. But "Serious Sam 2" failed
to add anything new (other than some cartoonishly awful attempts at
humor) and felt increasingly stale. "Serious Sam 3" tried to ape
contemporary 'modern-warfare' shooters, and was the worse for it. I
struggled to finish the game, and after that I never picked up any of
    the sequels.

It didn't help either that they kept re-releasing the older games,
repackaging them with new names and slight QOL improvements. The
    franchise was already confusing enough with its weird naming scheme;
this just made it all the harder to get into.

I never played any of the sequels after "Serious Sam 3". From what
I've read of the reviews, I'm probably the better off for that. In
some regards, they remind me of "Half Life"; technologically adept
games that were a delight to play in their day, but whose time has
passed them by and become a franchise I just can't get that excited
about anymore. The original 'encounters' still hold up pretty well
--on occasion, I still fire them up and play a few levels-- but I
really don't care if they ever make another sequel to the games.

Like many franchises, I'd rather the developers just try something new
rather than continually try to milk old ideas.
