    Dear comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action,

I'm currently waiting for the download to finish, of Jade Empire (2005).

So this is a boredom post, so to speak. I don't know what to expect. I
do not recall playing this game; at least not long enough to remember
what it was like, but it is for some reason in my GOG library. By that
    token, it's a /free game/.

So, without spoilers please, what am I going get?

Ok, so after installation, I've finished a single practice bout and have
been walking about the school grounds.

The game itself seems to be somewhat traditional fighting game, but I've
only played it with a mouse and a keyboard. Maybe next time I can try a
U.S.B. arcade stick; but that depends on where it is, and how easy it is
to connect to my white tower of blinking magick.

I'm fairly certain it will be somewhat annoying to play with a full size
arcade stick, and I'll defer that analysis for later, when I can be
    bothered to try it.

I just hope there's no incompatibility with a game from the past and a controller from the future. It's enough trouble to get modern games to
work with modern controllers, but that's the world we live in.

It would, in theory, be fun to try the game with a gameport arcade stick
but those are even harder to get working on modern computers of blinking
    magic.

So, given that we have hoarders in the group, how do you play modern
    games with gameport controllers?

Anyway, best wishes, and happy Jade Empires.

And since I have played this game just slightly more since last followup
I can say the story -- at the start -- is definitely better than Cyber-
    punk 2077.

That may change, and this story can get worse, and the Cyberpunk 2077
story can get better, which would be a welcome surprise. I just don't
    think that's likely.

I've always wanted to play this, just the title sounds thrilling and exotic. Let us know how it goes! Just this last week I started Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (also from GoG), an even older game than JadeE,
    2003 ! I'm enjoying it quite a bit, about 30% done now.

I know dosbox has controller support, but I've never gotten it to work
    (or tried very hard.)

You can expect an RPG-lite, kinda KoTOR experience. There is more
arcade-ish combat, with a number of fighting styles that are fun. Combat
plays more like a beat-em-up than a CRPG.

You can also expect annoying arcade sequences that add nothing to the
game. Really. On the level of "let's play 1941 now."

Story is interesting. Got about halfway through it and thought it was
bland. Dropped it. Thinking of going back but wondering if it will run.

KBM is a fine control system for Jade Empire, but controllers are good
    too.

The graphics were gorgeous for the time.

That's one of my favorite games of all time. I like the whole series,
the whole style of those games.
